Unhealthy Gums a Predictor of Cardiovascular Disease? Recent Study Suggests a Link

Recent JAMA study shows a history of Periodontal Disease is a predictor of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and early death for postmenopausal women over 55 years of age. The question is... does improving your periodontal condition reduce your chances of serious life-threatening disease?

According to the  Journal of the American Heart Association (the JAMA study originally published on March 29th, 2017) older women with gum disease or tooth loss have a significant increase of dying early due to heart disease and stroke. This was an observational study so it cannot determine cause and effect, but the data “does suggest that women who have lost their teeth have a higher risk for death, even at later ages in life,” said the lead author, Michael J. LaMonte, an epidemiologist at the University at Buffalo.

“Oral screening in midlife may be just as important as screening for cholesterol, high blood pressure or glucose tolerance.”

In the JAMA study, scientists looked at the data of 57,001 women 55 to 89 years old, free of heart disease, and enrolled Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study from 1993 through 1998.

They followed these women for an average of seven years. The study controlled for many factors, including age, smoking, education level, body mass index, physical activity and history of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The Study's Conclusion

In older women, edentulism (the condition of being toothless, or partial tooth loss) was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and total mortality. The presence of periodontitis, which is more prevalent than edentulism, was associated with 17% higher mortality rate in women over 55. 

"A controlled study recently published in JAMA found women who had gum disease have a 46% higher risk for death from any other cause than those without dental problems!!"

The researchers determined that women who suffered from edentulism and periodontal disease were at 46 percent higher risk of death from any cause than those without these dental problems. Women with toothlessness alone were at 12 percent greater risk for death and those with periodontal disease alone at 11 percent greater risk.
